Thrush

A choke, or reactor as it is also called, consists of a copper wire coil either with or without an iron core and acts as an inductive reactance. Chokes are normally used to limit or equalise current or to create reactive power.

In industrial contexts, the iron core choke is by far the dominant type. The construction of the choke is basically the same as for the transformer. A winding of copper wire around an iron core. However, the choke differs in one important respect and that is the air gap required in the iron circuit. Without this air gap, there is a risk of saturation of the core, while it is required to define the inductance value. The size of the air gap is adapted to the current, the winding speed and the saturation of the iron core to obtain the right inductance and characteristics.
